Questions

Frequently asked

Our AI is trained based on a traditional comic book grading standard and evaluates cover wear, spine condition, creases, stains, and other defects to produce a grade. It's designed to give collectors a reliable, and impartial reference grade for comic books, on-demand. Because there is variance across camera lenses, lighting conditions, camera stability, etc, some variance should be expected from time to time; just as there is variance in human grading. On a regular basis (current cadence is roughly twice a month), the AI will be updated based on the books submitted, feedback received regarding the specific grade of the book, and human training input — so expect our accuracy to improve over time.
For most collectors, AI Comic Grading offers something the traditional companies simply can't — instant results, no shipping risk, and the ability to keep your book readable. If you're a serious investor who needs a certified slab for high-value auction or resale, a traditional grading service may still fit that specific need. But for the everyday collector who wants to know what they have, grade books before buying at a show, or build a personal grading history, AI Comic Grading is a faster, more affordable, and more convenient solution.
Absolutely not.
We encourage it! That's one of the best use cases. Pull out your phone at a show, photograph a book you're thinking of buying, and get a grade before you hand over any money.
For now, the AI Comic Grading app is 100% free to download, and for your first week, we offer all new users 3 free grading credits per day. After your first week, we scale that back to 3 free credits per week, and eventually it becomes 2 free credits per month. That said; we offer grading credit packages because the free credits aren't always going to be enough. Our current pricing structure is $3.99 for 5 grading credits, $9.99 for 15 and $19.99 for 40.

ENCAPSULATION IS NOT PRESERVATION

No grading company provides UV protection

The acrylic cases used by traditional grading companies do not filter UV rays. The materials look protective, but they offer no meaningful barrier against light-induced damage — and none of the major graders claim otherwise in their fine print.

The problem is that many collectors assume otherwise. The perception of a "professionally preserved" slab creates a false sense of security, and over the years this has led countless collectors to display their books in direct sunlight, under fluorescent lights, or in bright retail cases — inadvertently causing the very damage they were trying to prevent.

UV exposure causes paper to yellow, colors to fade, and staples to rust — all of which degrade a book's grade. A 9.8 displayed in a sunny room for a few years may no longer be a 9.8, regardless of what the label says.

If UV protection matters to you, dedicated UV-filtering display cases or dark storage are the only real options — slab or no slab.

Why no one can guarantee the grade stays valid

A grade reflects the condition of a book at the moment it was graded — not necessarily what it is today. Once a book is encapsulated, that label is frozen in time, but the book inside isn't.

A slabbed 9.8 that gets dropped on its corner can sustain real damage inside the case. The book can shift, bend, or crease without the slab showing any visible sign of the impact.

Likewise, a book graded in 2017 and displayed in direct sunlight for nine years has almost certainly faded or yellowed. The slab provides no UV protection — and the grade on the label still says 9.8.

We don't guarantee it either. At AI Comic Grading, grades reflect condition at the time of submission, and we say so upfront.
